In the academic realm, this can be seen as especially true. However, as stated by Bryce Buchmann, â€Å"about 75 percent of college students admit to cheating† (Buchmann). This doesn’t seem to line up with the idea of integrity. However, many students â€Å"cheat† as a result of crossing rather thin boundaries in their performance. Academic integrity can be broken down into incompatible and compatible practices in addition to understanding how to differentiate the boundary that separates them. In order to understand the ideal of academic integrity, the first step is knowing what incompatible practices constitute as cheating. One of the biggest examples of these incompatible practices is plagiarism. Plagiarism can be summarized as â€Å"the act of taking another’s work or ideas and issuing t hem as one’s own† (Plagiarism). Plagiarism encompasses several different acts, from straight copying and pasting to absent citations to lack of reference when developing an idea from their research. The stories I shall be comparing are The Superstitious Mans Story written by Thomas Hardy in 1894, and Night Fears by L. P. Hartley in 1924. We expect to find inconclusive endings in these kinds of stories because if there was not it would be a good detective story instead. In the Superstitious Mans story, yes, because William died so suddenly and nobody can explain. In Night Fears, yes these was an inconclusive ending because we dont know exactly what the stranger was, and he just disappeared at the end and never returned. I think the ending of Thomas Hardys story was more effective because the whole story was easier to follow, and I think it is because William is more of a quiet and mysterious character. Conclusion Night Fears is the more effective horror story, because it is at night, and it is cold, which makes it scary, and adding the mysterious and strange characters as well. Moreover, he reflects on the some of the most controversial issues surrounding the cold war era, specifically, the the Tonkin Golf Incident, and the resolution it gave way to. McNamara examines what he believes to be the key questions surrounding these events that have sparked debate for decades. Did attacks occur on two US naval warships in the Gulf of Tonkin? Were these attacks provoked by the Johnson administration, in order to Justify a declaration of war? Was the subsequent U. S. retaliation Justified? McNamara attempts to answers these questions, based on his recollection of the events leading up to and after the Gulf of Tonkin resolution was passed. However, upon close examination of the facts and cross-referencing from other sources, it appears much of McNamaras account proves largely inaccurate, and lacks important detail. Essentially, McNamaras memoir can be seen as an attempt to admonish himself of the controversy. He removes himself from many of the important events, and gives the illusion that he was a mere observer of the nfortunate incidents that would lead to a declaration of war by President Johnson. Primarily his account is lacking in its accuracy of the intelligence gathered after the two Naval war ships Turner Joy and Maddox were attacked on August 2nd and 4th of 1964. Moreover, he fails to present an accurate picture of the case for the Tonkin Resolution that took place two days after the attack on August 6th. McNamara does recognize the importance of the alleged attacks surrounding the Gulf of Tonkin, as they would be the main motivation behind President Johnson resolution. The subsequent resolution would increase US military personnel in Vietnam, from 16,000 to 550,000 men. Thus, he appears to present in depth detail as to the probability these attacks actually occurred. He states In Retrospect, The evidence of the first attack is indisputable. The second attack seems probable but not certain. l While this may not seem like a statement that a man attempting to clear his name would make, the evidence he uses to Justify his thoughts would prove inaccurate. Many historians today do acknowledge that the August 2nd attack did occur, with McNamara obtaining an enemy shell fragment from the ship as proof. However, numerous studies and research as recent as 2005, have proven that the second attack on August 4th did not take place. In the events leading up to the second alleged attack, McNamara d iscusses CIA covert guerilla operations that took place in conjunction with South Vietnamese forces, know as the 34A operations. In addition, the US naw was conducting a system of global electronic reconnaissance, that collected radio and radar signals, emanating from the shore-based stations on the periphery of Communist countries such as the Soviet Union, China, North Korea, and, North Vietnam. 2 These operations were known as DESOTO missions. McNamara states that Although some individuals knew of both 34A operations and DESOTO patrols, few senior officials planned or followed in detail the operational schedules of both. 3 This statement concerning the overall cooperation between the two operations does prove accurate in other accounts. However, McNamaras statement tnat Desoto patrols OITTerea suostantlally in purpose and procedure from 34A operations4 can actually be seen as incorrect. A top secret document declassified in 2005, in one instance gave orders to a DESOTO atrol to Locate and identify all coastal radar transmitters, note all navigation aids along the DVRs [Democratic Republic of Vietnams] coastline, and monitor the Vietnamese Junk fleet for a possible connection to DRVNiet Cong maritime supply and infiltration routes. 5 This mission was essentially planned to gather information that would be useful to 34A raid operations in the vicinity of DESOTO patrols. In addition, McNamara writes that while some believed 34A operations had played a part in the initiating North Vietnamese actions against the Maddox and Turner Joy, nd others(including McNamara), pointing to 34As ineffectiveness found the explanation hard to accept. 6 At the congressional hearing that took place on August 6th 1964, McNamara again downp lays the role of the 34A missions, saying they were a worthless pinprick to the North Vietnamese. Yet, McNamara ignores that tension had in fact been increasing between the DRV and the South Vietnamese 34A operations. In one example on July 28th, after a 34A attack on the Island of Hon Grio, DRV patrol boats chased the South Vietnamese operatives over 45 nautical miles before giving up the chase. Nonetheless, declassified audiotapes from the Johnson library in 2005 contain a very intriguing statement made by McNamara. In the morning after the August 2nd attack, McNamara admits to the president that attack and the 34A operation were in fact connected. He states, We probably shot up a radar station and a few other miscellaneous buildings. And following 24 hours after that with this destroyer in the same area undoubtedly led them to connect the two events. 9 Not only does McNamara use misleading information regarding the 34A and DESOTO operations, but he also leaves out crucial detail from the intelligence that as gathered that day. McNamara does show that there was a great sense of doubt as to whether the August 4th attack occurred, using testimony from the officers on board the two ships that day, as well as from pilots that flew over the ships. McNamara describes how unusual weather conditions, and overeager sonar men, may have played a significant role in the accuracy of the alleged attacks. Yet, he doesnt disclose that there was in fact, faulty equipment on both ships. In an article written by an NSA analyst entitled Skunks, Bogues, and Flying Fish: The Gulf of Tonkin Mystery, Captain John J. Herrick of the Maddox, had reported that the Maddoxs long range, air search radar was inoperative, and fire control radar belonging to the U. S. S. Turner Joy was out of malfunctioning as well. 0 Even in Herricks initial account of the August 4th attack, he reported two skunks(surface contacts) and three bogies(air contacts). Moments later, he would disregard these findings as terrain returns, proving further the faulty equipment both ship had. 11 Moreover, McNamara leaves out the clear difference in the sonar reports from the August 2nd and August 4th attacks. As reports show, the radar from both the Maddox and Turner Joy on August 4th were not continuous trackings, but mostly unexpected flash returns that appeared for a few seconds on radar and disappeared12. On the August 2nd attack Vietnamese PT boats would take several hits but remain afloat and visible on the radar while on the night of August 4th, A target would apparently be nlt ana tnen Olsappear, as IT It naa completely ana Instantaneously Inclneratea In an explosion. 13 The reader may ask, Out of all the faulty evidence why did Robert McNamara still confirm that the August 4th attack? In Retrospect, McNamara amously stated in response to a report of the August 4th attack, We obviously dont want to do it (launch the retaliatory strike) until we are damn sure what happened. 14Basically, McNamara tries to persuade the reader that he had actually looked at all the intelligence gathered from that day and found substantial evidence that would make it appear the August 4th attack occurred. McNamara provides what he believes to be the five main factors that had persuaded him. Out of all these factors the most important was his claim that the U. S. had intercepted and translated a North V ietnamese message indicating two of its boats had been sunk. This piece of alleged evidence was so important that at the congressional hearing that took place on August 6th McNamara stated that he had unimpeachable proof of four North Vietnamese radio messages that showed clear intention to attack U. S. destroyers on the night of August 4th. 15. Surprisingly, McNamara leaves this statement out of Retrospect, and only states that the messages would later prove to be from the August 2nd attacks. Alarming evidence released by NSA historians would prove that not only was Robert McNamara wrong in his previous statement he knew he was, and overed up crucial information in order to protect himself. Out of all the intercepted messages from the North Vietnamese only 15 of the 122 were used. It is believed that over 90% of these messages were kept out of reports because of the conflicting accounts of the August 4th events they told. 16 Additionally, most of messages that were sent contained severe analytic errors, unexplained translation changes, and the conjunction of two messages in one. 17 In one example analytic error, an intercepted message contained the Vietnamese phrase Hanh Quan which can mean military operation. The phrase has an alternative meaning however of forced or long march or movement. In a nautical context, this could simply refer to a long voyage. This second context would make more sense when it was learned in another message, that the North Vietnamese had actually been preoccupied with a salvage mission, in which they were searching for the two sunken boats from August 2nds battle. 18 The congressional hearing that would follow on August 6th 1964, would create even more confusion. McNamara emphasizes that at the time of the hearing, he truly believed all of his statements were accurate. But the information Just presented holds a strong case for the lack of merit in his writing. Its as if McNamara held no control over the events that took place and is an innocent observer. In the non-fiction book Why the Senate Slept, author Ezra Siff presents a different picture of the events. The hearing that took place on August 6th, was a Joint executive session of Senate Foreign Relations and Armed services forces committees to testify to on both the events that took place on August 2nd and August 2nd and 4 and in support of the resolution presented before both houses. Siff makes the point that it was completely irresponsible to hold a hearing of only three hours on a complex series of events that took place over two days; Most of the senators werent even remotely familiar with what was going on at the time19 McNamara asserts that the key issue was the ambiguous language of the Constitution, which established the president as commander in chief but gave Congress the power to declare war. 20 Senator HulDrlgnt wno pres10ea over tne nearing ana oversaw tne resolutlon on tne senate floor, would later absolve McNamara of the charge of intentionally misleading Congress. As a result, I believe that because of Senator Fulbrights gracious actions towards McNamara, he doesnt mention the contradicting responses Fulbright gives to those senators that asked questions about the power of the resolution. In one instance Senator Daniel Brewster (D-Md) asked is there anything in the resolution which would authorize or recommend or approve the landing of large Americ an armies in Vietnam? Fulbright gives a contradictory response in which he states There is nothing in the resolution, as I read it, that contemplates it. However, the language of the resolution doesnt prevent it. In another instance, Senator Jack Miller (R-lw) attempted to understand the phrase in the resolution that stated Congress approves and supports the determination of the President to prevent further aggression. He then inquired as to who they would be preventing aggression from; Aggression against the U. S.? Or Aggression against the South Vietnamese. Senator Fulbright simply replied with l believe that both are included in that phrase. 23 It is evident from these responses that all Fulbright really did was cloud issue with his response to the senators questions. Even though the many in Congress were apprehensive of the resolution, it still passed almost unanimously, with only two senators voting against the resolution. The question still remains however, why did it pass? McNamara in some sense does give an accurate answer when referring to the ambiguous language of both the constitution and the resolution itself. But, he still doesnt analyze some of the other key factors such as the role of Senator Fulbright in the hearings. It was his assurance that This resolution doesnt mean a thing. Lyndon wants this to show he can be decisive and firm with the ommunists, too, that would help persuade congress. Congress understood the breadth of the resolutions power but they didnt for see that it would be an authorization for the escalation of war. 24 Likewise, McNamara doesnt take into account the reaction the general public would have if the committee voted the no on the resolution. McNamara doesnt include in his memoir President Johnsons radio and television appearance shortly after the second attack, in which he informed the public of two unprovoked attacks on US naval vessels in the Tonkin Gulf. Its obvious hat any member of congress that wanted to continue their career in politics could not vote no to a resolution in response to two unprovoked attacks. They would be viewed as completely unpatriotic during a time of national crisis. To put it plainly, congress didnt really have a choice in the matter. Unfortunately, the Tonkin resolution would commit over half a million US military forces to Vietnam with a death toll that would reach over 58,000 Americans. Subsequently, many Americans immediately put the blame on Robert McNamara and the Johnson Administration. Whether they are deserving of it, the question still remains. Robert McNamara attempts to bring clarity to the events surrounding the Golf of Tonkin in his memoir In Retrospect, but it unfortunately is an inadvertent attempt to clear his name. Because of this attempt to admonish himself, McNamara leaves out important detail specifically involving intelligence gathered after the second attack that took place on August 4th, as well as important dialogue that occurred during the congressional hearings on August 6th. Here are three examples of sentences in which the quotation’s initial word is demoted. 1. Without federal instructions, he added, â€Å"People are just going to keep putting stuff out on the road with no guidance on how do we do this the right way.† The quotation marks accurately denote the speaker’s exact statement, but the writer has inserted a modifying phrase to provide additional context, paraphrasing the speaker’s intent. Energy expended during physical activity contributes 20-30% to the body's total energy output. One of the most reliable methods in calculating calories burned during physical activity is the Metabolic Energy (MET) Method. The thermic effect of food is the increase in energy required to digest food and is determined by taking 10% of the total calories consumed (Pierson 2005). Based on the formula, the total calories that my body requires per day is 1,979. Food Intake Analysis results show that my calorie intake is only at 1,280. This means that I am taking in less calories than I expend. The long-term effects of this deficiency on my body would be weight loss which I would welcome if I felt I needed to lose weight. However, it can also result to the development of illnesses related to deficiencies in nutrients in my diet. How to Analyize and Argue an Essay Essay A critique is an essay in which you evaluate (comment on the positive and negative aspects of) an essay or article. A critique can be positive (reasons the argument worked), negative (reasons the argument did not work), or shaded (reasons parts of it worked and parts of it didn’t). When you write a critique, it is important to keep in mind that you are not making suggestions for the author odds are the author isn’t interested in what you think she could have done differently—you are writing for another reader. A critique is often born out of reaction (you liked or disliked the argument), but is based on and supported by close reading and evaluation, not just how you feel. Writing a critique requires that you have a clear understanding of the essay. You should know the argument, the purpose, and the ways that the author supports the argument. If you can’t clearly articulate those things, you’ll have a hard time critiquing them. For tips on that process, see the summary page. Sometimes a critique is called an analysis or a close reading. In all cases you’re offering your own reasoned response to the ideas that the writer presents and the way the writer presents them. What to do: Begin by summarizing the piece. You’ll likely need a brief overview in your introduction anyway, and it never hurts to have a firm sense of the argument in your head before you begin a critique. In many cases your instructor will require you to begin a critique with a summary. Decide whether your critique will be positive or negative. Are you interested in the positives of the piece or the negatives? Did the author convince you or not? Do you want to highlight a combination of positive and negative? Pick several specific points from the essay that you wish to use as your supporting claims. You might take issue with an author’s organization or tone, or with her use of supporting arguments. The more specific you are in your points, the better your critique will be. See below for a list of possible critique points. The thesis of a critique is relatively straightforward. You simply need to present your evaluation of the article you’re critiquing. You then support that thesis using the several points you’ve chosen. In each paragraph of a critique, develop one of your points. Use specific examples from the text. If you want to say that the author’s tone was inappropriate for the subject matter, find a quote and then explain how the tone is inappropriate and why. Usually each paragraph explains only one example. You might have two paragraphs that discuss different examples of the same general point—for instance, two different examples of inappropriate tone. The number of body paragraphs depends on the length of the assignment. A two-page critique might not have more than two or three body paragraphs. A four-page critique might require five or six body paragraphs. Choose enough examples so that you can discuss each one in its own body paragraph. A general rule of thumb is that body paragraphs should be about a half a page long, double-spaced. In your conclusion, you want to remind readers of your thesis and pull all of your examples together. You don’t want your conclusion to simply restate your introduction, nor do you want to provide entirely new information. You want to naturally draw readers to an end. *Elements to Critique Here is a list of various elements you can look for in an article you want to critique. Keep in mind that not every item will be appropriate to every article. Logic: Has the writer picked examples that logically support her claim? Is her reasoning (the way she works out her ideas) in line with the claim and what you know to be true? Logic: Does the writer have reasonable support but is the overall claim itself flawed? (one might claim that global warming doesn’t exist, and then use sources that describe the recent temperature shifts as normal geological cycles. The supporting claims are logical, but the overall claim that global warming doesn’t exist is not logical because the temperatures are, in fact, rising. Does the writer use enough evidence to support his claims? Is the evidence the writer uses appropriate? For example, using outdated statistics is not effective, nor is using evidence that is not actually relevant to the topic. Tone: Is the writer’s tone appropriate to the subject matter? Is the tone at an appropriate level to the audience? If the writer is overly sarcastic, for example, that tone might not be appropriate to a subject like drunk driving. Tone: Does the author seem overly critical of a single person or movement in ways that do not support his or her thesis? Is the word choice appropriate for the audience? (If the article is from a popular magazine such as MacLean’s, but the language is highly technical and specialized, that might be less appropriate. ) Organization: Is the article organized in a way that makes sense? Does the organization make the article easier to read or more difficult? Expertise: Does the author establish herself as an authority on the subject? If so, how? Does she describe her credentials? Use technical terms? Refer to sources? These are just some of the different aspects of an article that are open to critique. Pick a few, look for very specific examples in the text, and build your body paragraphs around them. What it looks like: Below you will find two different samples. Each one contains the introduction and one body paragraph of a critique. One is a mostly positive critique, and one is a negative critique. Positive Critique: In â€Å"Game Theories† Clive Thompson uses the story of a man, Edward Castronova, to discuss online gaming worlds and their economy. He begins with a long introduction about Mr. Castronova, and then proceeds to outline several points about online gaming while still using Castronova’s story throughout the essay. His intent is to bring to light several opinions, facts, and debates regarding virtual reality games. In writing this piece, Thompson is effective in reaching this goal. He does so by using Edward Castronova as a credible example and reference, by his language and word choices, by quoting people highly involved in the virtual world, and by using recognizable and interesting examples of specific online gaming worlds. Thompson begins his essay by introducing readers to Edward Castronova, an economist who investigated the economy of online gaming worlds, and who submitted his findings on an academic website. Right off the bat Thompson draws the attention of readers by presenting Edward Castronova in a simple, story-like way. Readers find stories easy to read and to relate to, and for the first several paragraphs Thompson is in fact telling a brief story. Once Clive Thompson has successfully given readers Castronova’s background, he brings himself into the piece in a brief paragraph telling how he met Castronova. This is very effective because it associates him with the person whom readers are now interested in, and gives them more reason to find his writing credible and worth interest. Being able to associate with a real-life person allows readers to be more connected to the piece and to the author. It brings the entire piece closer to home, so to speak, which makes the entire essay more readable. Readers are more likely to enjoy an essay if they feel they can relate to its topic and to the author. Thompson accomplishes this reader comfort by introducing Edward Castronova and by connecting himself to this man. Negative Critique: In â€Å"Image World,† Michael Posner analyzes society’s dependence on visual stimulation using daily events as examples. Posner demonstrates society’s inability to distinguish reality from fantasy through numerous examples such as theme parks, rock concerts and political campaigns. Posner emphasizes on society’s attachment to imagery because he believes it is the only way to capture our attention, he also believes that it is the only way for people to understand the significance of a piece of writing or event. Posner’s primary audience include readers of Queen’s Quarterly and his secondary audience include students. Although readers recognize Posner’s argument on the effects of imagery within the culture of society, they are not convinced because of his negative outlook; therefore, he is not effective in his argument. In this essay I examine the different methods in which Posner is not effective: the use of excessive examples, tone and language, and organization. Posner’s use of excessive examples to support his argument distracts the reader. Although some readers may believe that using numerous examples further supports Posner’s argument, that writing alone is not enough to captivate the attention of the reader, students would argue against. Jury nullification is basically the situation wherein a certain guilty person was given the judgment â€Å"not guilty† by the set of jurors or the jury itself when that person is believed to be guilty of the crime he or she is accused of. An example of a jury nullified case is the famous case during the year 1735. This case is the trial case of John Peter Zenger charged by the former Governor of the New York Colony, William Cosby. The U.S. Supreme Court sent the case back to the California Supreme Court to decide this issue, but before it could rule, California changed its law (Brennan 2007). A guy named Baker v. Pataki from New York City was a very good example of â€Å"purposeful racial discrimination† having him convicted by felony. A mixed Afro-American Latino challenged New York’s federal court who denied the votes of several felony offenders, in prison or on parole. He said that these act is merely against the Voting Rights Act 1968 since it has a disproportionate racial impact. How to Use a Library for Research For some students, one of the biggest differences between high school and college is the amount and depth of research that is required for research papers. College professors expect students to be quite adept at researching, and for some students, this is a big change from high school. This is not to say that high school teachers dont do a great job of preparing students for college-level research- quite the contrary! Teachers fill a tough and essential role in teaching students how to research and write. College professors simply require students to take that skill to a new level. For example, you may soon discover that many college professors won’t accept encyclopedia articles as sources. Encyclopedias are great for finding a compact, informative accumulation of research on a specific topic. They are a great resource for finding the basic facts, but they are limited when it comes to offering interpretations of the facts. Professors require students to dig a little deeper than that, accumulate their own evidence from broader sources, and form opinions about their sources as well as the specific topics. For this reason, college-bound students should become familiar with the library and all its terms, rules, and methods. They should also have the confidence to venture outside the comfort of the local public library and explore more diverse resources. Card Catalog For years, the card catalog was the only resource for finding much of the material available in the library. Now, of course, much of the catalog information has become available on computers. But not so fast! Most libraries still have resources that haven’t been added to the computer database. As a matter of fact, some of the most interesting items- the items in special collections, for instance- will be the last to be computerized. There are many reasons for this. Some documents are old, some are hand-written, and some are too fragile or too cumbersome to handle. Sometimes it’s a matter of manpower. Some collections are so extensive and some staffs are so small, that the collections will take years to computerize. For this reason, it’s a good idea to practice using the card catalog. It offers an alphabetical listing of titles, authors, and subjects. The catalog entry gives the call number of the source. The call number is used to locate the specific physical location of your source. Call Numbers Each book in the library has a specific number, called a call number. Public libraries contain many books of fiction and books relevant to general use. For this reason, public libraries often use the Dewey Decimal System, the preferred system for fictional books and general use books. Generally, fiction books are alphabetized by the author under this system. Research libraries use a very different system, called the Library of Congress (LC) system. Under this system, books are sorted by topic instead of the author. The first section of the LC call number (before the decimal) refers to the subject of the book. That is why, when browsing books on shelves, you will notice that books are always surrounded by other books on the same topic. Library shelves are usually labeled on each end, to indicate which call numbers are contained within the particular aisle. Computer Search Computer searches are great, but they can be confusing. Libraries are usually affiliated or connected to other libraries (university systems or county systems). For this reason, computer databases will often list books that are not located in your local library. For instance, your public library computer may give you a â€Å"hit† on a certain book. On closer inspection, you may discover that this book is only available at a different library in the same system (county). Don’t let this confuse you! This is actually a great way to locate rare books or books that are published and distributed within a small geographic location. Just be aware of codes or other indication which specify the location of your source. Then ask your librarian about interlibrary loans. If you want to limit your search to your own library, it is possible to conduct internal searches. Just become familiar with the system. When using a computer, be sure to keep a pencil handy and write down the call number carefully, to avoid sending yourself on a wild goose chase! You may be required to put most of your belongings into a locker as you enter the room or building where special items are held. Things like pens, markers, beepers, phones, are not permitted, as they could damage delicate collection items or disrupt other researchers.You may find special collections materials by doing a normal library search with index cards, but the search process may differ from place to place.Some libraries will have all the collections materials indexed in their electronic databases, but some will have special books or guides for the special collections. Dont worry, someone will always be on hand to guide you and let you know where to find materials that sound interesting.Some material will be available on microfilm or microfiche.
